While almost every child dreams of meeting a dinosaur, the Jurassic Park kind, we know it’s not practical. But what if it was possible for your child to meet a living dinosaur while on vacation, wouldn't that be amazing, and probably the best children's vacation ever?
There are animals today whose close relatives roamed the swamps and seas of the Triassic and Cretaceous, back some 220 million to 150 million years ago. Animals that have changed little from those times, living fossils whose forefathers came face to face with Tyrannosaurs, Brontosaurus, Pliosaurus, Plesiosaurs and their charming friends. Would your child get a thrill out of meeting one of these living dinosaurs?

Giant crocodilians
The first, while not quite as big as some of their ancestors, is the fearsome crocodile, from the giant man-eating "Salties" of Australia, to those of Florida and Texas, where a 5-year old boy recently shot and killed a 12-foot "Gator".
But these guys aren't the cute and cuddly sorts of living dinosaur most parents want their children to meet on vacation, far from it in fact. However there are others that do meet with most parents’ approval...
Giant leatherback sea turtles
The second living dinosaurs that jump to mind are giant leatherback sea turtles, gentle, lovable, leviathan of the deep that roam our seas from Iceland to the Caribbean. Ancient mariners who still swim through today's oceans coming to land just once ever 2 to 3 years to lay their eggs.
This is an incredible experience for a child. It's a direct link back to Hadrosaurs, duck-billed dinosaurs who layed their eggs in colonies after long migrations. It's an adventure to be relished as a family, an experience never to be forgotten, a journey back in time to witness a drama that's almost as old as time itself, and there are so many lessons to be learnt as you watch newly hatched, baby leatherback sea turtles set off on epic adventures of their own. Only 1 in 1,000 will survive the dangers of today's seas, and just by visiting them you improve their chances of survival.
And where are these living dinosaurs to be found?
There are many leatherback sea turtle nesting sites worldwide, though few are as important as the giant sea turtle nurseries to be found on the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago. It's estimated that 20% of the world's populating of leatherback sea turtles nests on the steep, heavy surfed, and loose sanded beaches of Trinidad's secluded Atlantic coast.
And while you're on vacation in Trinidad, why not take the time to meet some of it’s other strange and wonderful beasties like the endangered West Indian Manatee, or sea cow (a distant relative of the elephant), and tree sloths of the Nariva and Bush-Bush Wildlife Sanctuaries.
What an incredible adventure for any child who dreams of dinosaurs, possibly the best children's vacation ever...
