science giants

why do the "gas giants" have rings and the terrestrial planets dont?
its for science and i really dont know anything... can anyone help?
and please provide the link of the site you found the info on
There are three ways that planetary rings could form:
1. from material from the disk that formed the planets that was left over inside the planet's Roche limit (this means the material couldn't coalesce to form moons) - the jovian planets have larger regions of space inside their Roche limits for material to remain as small particles
2. from the debris of a moon that was torn apart by tides when it moved to within the planet's Roche limit - the jovian planets have larger regions of space inside their Roche limits and more moons, so its more likely for a moon to be torn apart
3. from the debris of a moon that was smashed by a large impact - the jovian planets have larger and stronger gravitational fields, so they can capture more objects from farther away and therefore impacts are more common
I don't have a site, since I learned this from articles in Astronomy and Sky And Telescope magazines and from other reading.
You might try wikipedia or nineplanets.org.
